By Jeremy Oliver
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #109, July/August 2003)
(Penfolds Wines Chardonnay Yattarna Adelaide Hills) ($65) Pale, bright straw with a faint yellow edge. Fragrant, stony, minerally aromas of dried flowers, melon and lemon blossom, with dusty nuances of clove and nutmeg. Seamless, tightly crafted and very long. Supple, juicy flavors of pineapple, grapefruit and mango are nicely complemented by nutty, vanillin oak. Finishes with citrus-like acids and a lingering mineral presence. Very polished chardonnay, but could it use a bit more soul? 93 points |

WS: Sneaks up on you, seeming tangy and refreshing at first, but then layers of flavor emerge. Shows grapefruit, lime and mineral up front, then picks up apricot, honey and sweet spice notes as the flavors go on and on. Great finish. More vibrant than previous vintages. Tempting already. Best from 2004 through 2008. 2,500 cases made. –HS |
