Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #133, July/August 2007)
(Shaw & Smith Shiraz Adelaide Hills) ($30) Bright purple. Intensely perfumed nose offers vivid, violet-accented blackberry and cherry sharpened by piquant minerality. Medium-bodied and fresh, with vibrant red and dark berry flavors, fine tannins and a crisp minerality on the finish. I love the combination of concentration and finesse here. WA: Bright, lively and distinctive for its peppery, spicy plum flavors, which remain zesty and finish with refinement and class. Has impeccable balance. Not as rich and round as other Shiraz, but harmonious and ageworthy. Drink now through 2015. 4,000 cases made. –HS |

WS: The 2005 Shiraz is deep purple with aromas of smoke, pepper, saddle leather, game, and blueberry. Medium- to full-bodied, this is a nicely balanced, elegantly styled Shiraz with well-concealed soft tannins, good depth and excellent concentration. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2020.
Shaw & Smith is a collaboration of cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW. The wines are all produced from Adelaide Hills fruit, most of it from their estate vineyards. Their first vintage was in 1990.
