IWC: By Ian D'Agata
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #128, September/October 2006)
(Moris Farms Avvoltore Maremma Toscana Rosso) ($49-$70; a blend of 75% sangiovese, 20% cabernet and 5% syrah) Deep, almost opaque ruby. The nose offers a compelling mix of pure, ripe dark plum and blackberry, complemented by a delicate licorice spiciness. Sweet, lush and broad on the palate, with captivating nuances of ripe dark fruits, leather, chocolate, earth and minerals. Shows just the slightest hint of alcoholic warmth on the long, suave finish, but this is a very well-balanced example of what could be achieved in the extra-hot 2003 vintage. WA: Morisfarms’ 2003 Avvoltore (75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah) presents a very dark color along with a similarly imposing, strapping frame packed with ripe plum, blackberry, tar and toasted oak notes showing outstanding concentration. It is especially well-balanced for such a big wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018. Importers: Doug Polaner, Polaner Selections, Mt. Kisco, NY; tel.
