IWC: By Stephen Tanzer
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #131, March/April 2007)
(Vins D'Orrance Syrah Cuvee Ameena Stellenbosch) ($40; 15% alcohol; aged in 80% new French oak) Ruby-red. Aromas of currant, dark plum, tobacco, chocolate and smoked meat. Chewy, rich and a bit youthfully clenched, offering slightly medicinal flavors of dark fruits, spicecake and chocolate. Tannins build on the back but avoid coming off as hard. Give this a year or two. (A bottle of similar quality sampled in South Africa was more fleshy and pliant, but a bit less expressive of its variety.)
