WA: Poggio Scalette occupies a beautiful spot in the hills of Greve. Proprietor Vittorio Fiore is one of Italy’s best known consulting oenologists so it can be no surprise that he and his son Jurij turn out gorgeous wines at their own estate. The 2003 Carbonaione (100% old-vine Sangiovese) is made in a big, powerful style that captures the essence of the vintage in its richness while maintaining superb overall balance. It offers generous dark fruit, earthiness, toasted oak and mineral notes with notable length and expansiveness on the palate. A lingering note of sweetness and finessed tannins round out the finish of this terrific wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021.
