Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, January/February 2008, Issue #136
(Domaine Auguste & Pierre-Marie Clape Cornas) ($96) Bright ruby. Strikingly fresh aromas of red berries, kirsch, incense and cured meat; turned even brighter with air, emphasizing raspberry and blackberry. Supple strawberry and raspberry flavors betray no rough edges and gain a compelling spiciness on the long, sappy finish. Wonderfully spherical for Cornas. 93 points |

WA: The 2005 Cornas reveals fabulous aromas of acacia flowers, scorched earth, blackberries, dense cherries, and damp forest floor. Full-bodied with high tannin, but equally high extraction and richness, patience will be required for purchasers of this superb Cornas. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020+.
Given the world-wide reputation of Clape, it is sometimes hard to realize that father Auguste and son Pierre-Marie only farm about 11 acres of Cornas. However, their biggest holding is in ancient vines from one of the appellation’s tenderloin parcels, the lieu-dit called Reynards. A traditionally made wine, Clape’s Cornas is harvested when very ripe, sees no destemming, and spends 18-24 months in old wood casks. The Renaissance is fashioned from the younger vines.

WS: A dense, racy red, with a terrific beam of raspberry and red currant fruit laced with a taut, chalky spine. Tightly drawn for now, with the structure dominant, but the core and balance are evident. A great tug of war between the minerality and the racy fruit plays out on the superlengthy finish. Best from 2012 through 2028. 1,330 cases made. –JM |
