WA: The single vineyard 2001 Pagos de Posada was fashioned from 75-100 year old Mencia vines planted on the slate hillsides and aged in 70% new French oak. Reminiscent of a Pinot Noir on steroids, it boasts a raspberry, flower, and stony-scented bouquet, layers of fruit, medium to full body, and superb purity as well as delineation. Red Burgundy fanatics should give this stunning, distinctive, singular effort a try. It should drink well for 5-7 years or longer. |

($40; like the crianza, this is 100% mencia) Good ruby-red. Crushed fruits, slatey minerality and a pinot-like floral note on the nose. Sweet, dense and creamy, with enticing raspberry flavor of noteworthy depth. A layered, lush mencia that really displays the fat and vinosity of this superb vintage. .
