IWC: By Stephen Tanzer
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #116, September/October 2004)
(Bodegas Montecillo Gran Reserva Seleccion Especial Rioja) ($75) Slightly hazy medium red. Knockout aromas reminiscent of old Burgundy: sappy red berries, coffee, mocha, toffee, earth, underbrush and mushroom. Fat, rich and concentrated; at once broad and bright. The sweet flavors of strawberry, currant and carob convey an impression of energy. Finishes with firm, dusty tannins and impressive lingering fruit. 92 points |

WS: Fully mature, yet still firm, this traditional red shows harmonious flavors of dried cherry, tobacco, cedar and tea, with a long, spicy finish. It lacks the elegance of the best traditional-style wines, but packs a punch. Drink now. 100 cases imported. –TM |
