WA: The 2003 “Hexagon” is a blend of Touriga Nacional and Syrah (30% each), Trincadeira (15%), Tinto Cao (13%), Touriga Franca (10%) and Tannat (2%). It is rather gamey, of medium weight, with tannins that sneak up to provide a little intensity on the finish, but eventually moderate. Not everyone will appreciate the sauvage aspects, which may vary in their intensity from bottle to bottle, so if that is a problem for you, note the caveat. However, the fruit flavor is good, the mid-palate depth good, and the texture round and appealing. It drinks well and has some distinction, with few rustic edges, and has a certain Rhone-y feel to which I gravitated. Drink now-2014. This Southern Portuguese winery has holdings in several regions. They are most famous for Lancer’s Rose, although Periquita is also a signature offering. In fact, they make some nice table wines, so don’t let that Lancer’s thing get in your way. The Domini wines were made in partnership with Cristiano van Zeller, owner of Quinta do Vale D. Maria, and former co-owner of Quinta do Noval. The strip label at the bottom, however, only carried the Fonseca designation, so I have listed them here. Importer for Periquita and Domini: Palm Bay Imports, Port Washington, NY; tel. (561) 362-9462. No known American importer for the Hexagon and FSF. |
