WA: The 2005 Cotes du Roussillon Les Sorcieres – from equal measures Carignan and Grenache plus 10% Syrah, all grown in Vingrau and Tautavel, and matured in used barriques – smells of black cherry preserves, mint, black pepper and soy. Juicy and impressively-concentrated on the palate, it features intense, sweetly jam-like black fruit accented by faintly bitter toasted walnut and fruit skin astringency. It then finishes darkly-fruited and – for an “intro level” cuvee – a bit forbiddingly astringent, though that might well be a function of recent bottling.
