2007-11-28 10:11 WS: Caresses the mouth with rich, refined blackberry, cream and dark plum flavors, flanked by rich, chocolaty notes. The luscious finish shows mocha and licorice, with hints of savory herbs. This really sings. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. Drink now through 2012. 1,600 cases made. –KM
2007-11-28 10:11 WA: The 2004 “Cedro” is Noval’s second wine, and is a blend of Touriga Nacional (40%), Tinta Roriz (40%) and Touriga Franca (20%) raised exclusively in French oak. It is rather forward, particularly at first, showing lots of primary fruit flavors, tasting grapey and young. It is not a fruit bomb, though, and in fact the fruit moderates a bit with air. Some brightness cuts the fruit and oak. The wine demonstrates some grip and a reasonable finish. The oak becomes a bit more prominent with air, too, but this should integrate well. Its mid-palate is medium weight. I thought there were times when there was some harshness on the finish, but this mostly came together well, and with substantial aeration, pure fruit flavors finely emerged, too. Retasting it the next day, I thought it showed rather fresh and lively, with assertive tannins and perhaps a touch of alcohol noticeable on the finish. As it aired out, though, you could see clearly why it was the second wine rather than the first given the greater depth and intensity of its big brother. Drink 2008-2015.
