($178; the 85% tempranillo component comes from vines averaging more than 60 years of age) Good bright, deep ruby. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, plum, mocha, minerals, and smoky, nutty oak. Lush, sweet and voluptuous, but with fruit of steel. Wonderfully dense, thick but vibrant wine that mounts impressively on the back half and saturates the palate with fruits, minerals and spices. One of the longest Spanish wines of my recent tastings and a great example of this outstanding vintage. . (Fine Estates >From Spain, Dedham, MA) 95 points |

WA: Price aside, there is no question that the 2001 Aurus, an 85% Tempranillo/15% Graciano blend, is a profound offering. It possesses a brooding density and backwardness as well as a fabulously complex nose of black fruits intermixed with truffles, licorice, smoky oak, and flowers. Voluptuously-textured with super concentration, amazing purity, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute, this monumental Rioja should drink well young, yet last for 15+ years. WS: This punchy red is dominated by toasty, smoky oak flavors, but there's plenty of ripe fruit underneath, with notes of plum, raisin and spice, and enough acidity to keep it lively. Drink now through 2010. 125 cases imported. –TM |
