(Ceretto Barbaresco Bricco Asili Bernadot) ($68) Lightish ruby. Reticent but clean nose offers modestly intense aromas of strawberry, raspberry, sour red cherry, crystallized lemon peel, red rose and marzipan. Pretty red cherry, strawberry and licorice flavors could use more juiciness and flesh; comes across as slightly tart-edged, but the acids are well integrated. A distinctly stony, gripping style of wine with noticeable wood tannins that turn drier and more peppery with aeration, this conveys an almost saline sense of extract on the moderately long, clean finish. 87 points |

WS: The 2003 Barbaresco Bricco Asili seems to have suffered more severely from the intense heat. It displays plenty of earthiness, vanilla, toasted oak, cola and ripe small red fruit nuances with promising length, but the finish is dominated by hard, unripe tannins. Bottle age will only help to a limited extent. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.
