WA: 2005 Soave Classico Superiore La Rocca (100% Garganega aged in oak) is sweet and long, with richly-textured notes of honey, apricots, candied fruits, spices, and roasted nuts. This full-bodied, polished Soave has enough stuffing to continue to drink well for several years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2011. Pieropan is one of the historic producers in the Soave region. From its pristine cellar the estate releases benchmark wines for the appellation. While I generally prefer Soave on the younger side, Pieropan’s wines have also proven to age gracefully. (Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca) ($43; 100% garganega) Golden straw-yellow. Captivating aromas of sexy new vanillin oak, pineapple, orange marmalade, mango and custard. Ripe and soft in the mouth, stuffed with canned pineapple, caramel, yellow peach and orange marmalade flavors. Supple and full, with the fruit here showing much more pronounced sweetness than that of the steely Calvarino bottling. This too benefits from beautiful definition, and the finish is long and suave. This is a ripe and sexy style of Soave that relies quite a bit on its vanillin-oaky veneer for charm. 91 points |
