Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #134, September/October 2007)
(Coates Wines Shiraz McLaren Vale) ($40) Ruby-red. Spicy red berry and cherry aromas lifted by energetic cracked pepper and mineral accents. Bright, precise and sweet, with elegant strawberry and raspberry flavors gently supported by fine-grained tannins. WA: The 2005 Shiraz was aged in old French and new Russian oak barrels. It exhibits a fragrant perfume of smoke, tar, black pepper, game and blueberry. Opulent on the palate with layered, spicy flavors, and good balance, it can be enjoyed now but will become more civilized with 3-5 years in the bottle.
