Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #10007, August 2007)
(Ampeleia Toscana Rosso) Deep ruby. Intense strawberry and mineral nose shows a slight whiff of varnish. Both sweet and salty on the palate, with pretty red fruit flavors, leather and smoke. Firm tannins turn slightly dry on the moderately long, complex finish. This relatively new estate is co-owned by three partners, one of whom is the well-known Trentino producer Elisabetta Foradori. In an effort to experiment and learn just what this warm-climate terroir in the Maremma part of Tuscany can achieve, the partners are growing as many as nine different grape varieties, including some that are truly hard to find in Italy, such as mourvedre. Year after year, however, the cabernet franc and grenache seem to be the most interesting. (Domaine Select, New York, NY) 88 points |
