Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Issue #128, September/October 2006)
(Dominio de Atauta Ribera Del Duero) ($42) Saturated violet. Dense, smoky and spicy, with strong aromas of cherry, blackcurrant and violet. Quite ripe, the dark fruit flavors deep and weighty, with good structure and solid but well-knit tannins. Takes on a more elegant quality with air, the flavors making a turn toward red fruit and a mineral note emerging. Finishes sweet, deep and long. Give this some time. 90 points |

WS: A plush, modern red, with sweet blackberry and cassis flavors accented with chocolate and coffee. The tannins are ripe but well-integrated, and the acidity is lively. Drink now through 2012. 10,000 cases made. –TM |

WS: The entry level 2004 Atauta comes from 60- to 150-year-old, biodynamically farmed, mostly ungrafted Tempranillo bush vines. The wine is aged in 100% French oak of which 20% is new. Dark ruby/purple in color, it has an expressive nose of spice box, coffee, black cherry and blackberry. Made in a racy style, with good acidity, this wine admirably combines ripe, sweet fruit with elegance. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. Kudos to Dominio Atauta!
