Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, March/April 2008, Issue #137
(Altair Vineyards & Winery Altair Cachapoal Valley) ($59; 73% cabernet sauvignon, 15% syrah, 11% carmenere and 1% cabernet franc) Deep red. Intensely perfumed nose offers a suave bouquet of spicy red berries, cherry and cassis; exotic floral and spice notes add complexity and build with air. Pliant raspberry and cherry flavors possess admirable depth and restrained sweetness. Probably the most energetic wine from Chile I found in my tastings this year. Finishes with impressive lift and cut. (Misa Imports, Dallas, TX) 93 points |

WA: The 2004 Altair offers a much more saturated purple color and more complex perfume than the 2003. Scorched earth, graphite, black currant, and blackberry liqueur aromas make an appearance. The wine is more mouth-filling than its sibling as well as more structured. Ripe black fruits persist through the pure finish. Cellar this beauty for 6-8 years and drink it through 2030.

WS: Shows grilled herb and roasted pepper, along with firm tannins and slightly chewy currant, coffee, sage and cocoa notes. Concentrated, but lacks vivacity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carmenère and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2009. 2,500 cases made. –JM |
